Ripe & Ready

This week we have Duke, Early Blue, Toro, Sierra and Brigita blueberries, raspberries, black currants, sylvan and katata blackberries, and columbia star marionberries for you-pick, all at $2.50/lb. At the farm stand we also have ready picked blueberries for $35/bag, sweet or sour cherries, blueberry juice, elderberry elixir, black currant jelly, and popsicles.. Blueberries will continue through early September. Next week we will also have boysenberries and obsidian blackberries. Later in July, plums and asian pears will ripen. August through October we will have apples, pears, and asian pears. Special fruits including elderberries, kiwis, figs and quince will be posted when ready; kiwis are generally late August or September.

We are open 8am to 3 pm Wednesday through Sunday. The you-pick is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, but ready picked berries can be picked up between 9 and 12 on Mondays and Tuesdays, as well as on any you-pick open day. After August 17th through September we are open Saturdays and Sundays only, 9am-3pm. In October we are open Saturdays only, 9am-3pm.

Fresh blueberries will be available starting June 14. Blueberries are a healthy food full of vitamins C and K1, manganese, and several other beneficial plant compounds. Eating them often may help with heart disease, brain health, and blood sugar levels. As a member of the heather family (Vaccinium ssp.), blueberries are closely related to cranberries, bilberries, and huckleberries.

Black elderberry extracts and flower infusions have been shown to help reduce the severity and length of influenza. Commercial preparations of elderberry for the treatment of colds come in various forms, including liquids, capsules, lozenges, and gummies. One 2004 study of 60 people with influenza found that those who took 15 mL of elderberry syrup four times per day showed symptom improvement in 2 to 4 days, while the control group took 7 to 8 days to improve .

Our black currants have a distinctive sharp, savory taste, making them great additions to smoothies, pastries, meat sauces, juices and desserts. They are extremely aromatic and the flavor is unmatched. Black currants can take some getting use to flavor-wise, but they will soon become a favorite. Fragrant and zesty, frozen black currants are an extremely rich source of antioxidants and vitamins.
